Good for photographic PNG files
A photo stored as PNG can be much larger than necessary. JPEG is often a better fit when transparency is not required and broad compatibility matters.
Transparency needs a background
JPEG cannot store transparent pixels. If the PNG contains transparency, ImageCarpenter lets you choose the solid background colour that replaces it instead of silently guessing.
Quality is adjustable
JPEG is lossy, so the output quality setting affects both appearance and file size. Start high for important images and lower it only when size matters.

Why did my transparent PNG get a background?
JPEG does not support alpha transparency, so transparent pixels must be flattened onto a solid colour.
Can JPG be smaller than PNG?
For photographs, often yes. For flat graphics or text-heavy screenshots, the tradeoff may be different.
